Long Beach is a city in Southern California with a population of around half a million residents. To the west of the city is the busy Port of Long Beach, the number 1 container port in the USA. It lies on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County. Its main industries are oil, manufacturing and technology companies as well as a thriving tourist industry.
In the 18th and 19th Centuries, Rancho Los Cerritos transferred from the Spanish to Mexican control and then was purchased by John Temple, an American originating from Massachusetts who began a cattle ranch. He sold this in 1866 to the sheep ranching company of Flint, Bixby & Co. the area was then known as the Bixby Land Company. Members of the Bixby family were instrumental in the creation of Long Beach and were responsible for developing the coastal areas and planning streets and parks. The 20th century saw the area grow as a popular tourist destination and The Pike an amusement park catered for the visitors. It was demolished in the 1970’s and the city bought the RMS Queen Mary to serve as a hotel, restaurant and maritime museum permanently docked on the Pike shoreline. Visitors today can also enjoy the Aquarium of the Pacific in the downtown area, the coastal bluffs and conservation in action in the Long Beach wetlands.
Long Beach is served by the Long Beach Airport and is well connected by a network of freeways including the 405, 5, 110 and the Long Beach Freeway (710) to name a few.
Culture and Sports are a feature of Long Beach life. The city is renowned for it street art murals and also hosts the only Latin American art museum in Western USA. It is perhaps best known for it’s musical institutions, the Long Beach Opera and the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra entertain year round and the city hosts many music festivals featuring an eclectic arrays of styles. Theatre is represented at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center and the well established Long Beach Playhouse. The Indy Car race is the individual largest event Long Beach hosts annually, this street race has been know as the Long Beach Grand Prix since 1975. Sailing is represented with the Congressional Cup regatta a major international event.
