Moving and Storage Q & A

Finding a Reputable Mover

Finding a Reputable Mover

This list is complied for a quick review of some of the best tips to help your move go as smoothly as possible.

  1. How do I find a reputable mover?

Ask family and friends. The Internet is also a good resource as you can get a lot of information on the company through their website. Be sure to check out their reputation at the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Some questions to ask before you hire:

    • Full company name and any DBA names (doing business as)
    • How long they have been in the moving business
    • DOT and MC license numbers
    • Company address
    • Phone numbers (local and toll-free)
    • Company web site address
    • Email addresses
    • References (be sure to call them)

If something does not feel right, move on, no pun intended!

  1. How far in advance should I hire movers?

It is best to plan a move 5-6 months ahead of time, especially if it is an international or overseas move. If you have less time, you can still find good movers but will have to move quickly. It is important to note that whether you have 2 or 6 months, be sure to do some research on the movers you hire.

  1. Should I move my items or hire professional movers ?

    Finding a Reputable Mover?

The main two things to consider when deciding to move your own items or to hire movers will be your budget and your ability to move the items yourself. Other considerations include how much time you have to pack and load your items and which is more economically practical.

  1. What is “do it yourself” moving?

There are various levels of “do it yourself” moving. Following are some common options:

    • Moveable pods (container) you load your items into. The storage company then picks up the pod and stores it in their storage facility.
    • Truck rental companies. You load your items and your drive the truck to your new location.

You will need to consider your budget, schedule and ability to physically move your items.

  1. What is portable moving storage?

They are moveable pods (container) you load your items into. You can then opt to store the pod or have it moved to another location right away or in the future. There is a charge for the storage and moving of the container. The advantage is that you can pack and load your items at your pace.

  1. What is the short and long term storage?

  • Movable pods. This type of storage offers the convenience of storing items at your own pace. They also will pick up the pod (storage container) and store it at their storage facility. You can then ask to transfer it to your new home or location.
  • Storage facilities. This is the most common and easy to find. These companies offer a variety of sizes to store your items in. They have everything from a closet space size to a warehouse.
  • Moving companies. Some moving companies will offer temporary storage after they have picked up your personal items. Typically this type of storage is very temporary due to limited storage available and the high costs involved.

The main difference between short and long-term storage is the length of time you choose to store your items. Some storage companies will offer a discount for long-term storage.

  1. How many supplies do I need to pack my items?

One of the first things you need to decide is what you will pack. A good idea is to sort things in three piles:

  1. Keep
  2. Donate
  3. Throw away

Once you have that part figured out then you can get:

  • Boxes (variety of shapes and sizes)
  • Packing
  • Carpet protection
  • Furniture sliders
  • Blankets

Make sure you get more supplies than you think you need. That way you will not have to run out in the middle of packing!

  1. What are the steps to international and overseas moving?

Some countries are very strict regarding what crosses their border and goes into their port. Depending on your destination, there are different border and port requirements specified by each country. It is important to hire an experienced international and overseas mover. They know what items you are allowed to take to your new destination as well as applicable laws.

  1. What are sub-contractors?

Many moving companies will represent themselves as your movers but then send a sub-contractor out on moving day. The problem with this is that you have not met with the sub-contractors and they may not have been processed through a pre-employment background and drug screening.

Be sure that you get information on the sub-contractors prior to your move so you can check out their background on the Internet and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Some questions to ask the moving company:

  • The name and number of the subcontractor to be used.
  • Is the subcontractor insured?
  • Does the subcontractor conduct pre-employment background and drug screens?

These questions are important as the sub-contractor will be in your home and they will be the ones you have to deal with when they are moving your items.

  1. How do I move my vehicle?

Transporting your vehicle can be one of the most stressful things about a long, or even short distance, move. Once you find a good vehicle moving company it really comes down to three choices: covered or not and whether you want a professional driver to transport your car. Shop around to get the best rates.

  1. Should I get extra insurance while moving?

One of the most upsetting experiences in moving is having an item get broken or end up lost. Extra insurance may be a good idea especially if you have expensive or irreplaceable items. Regular insurance provided by most moving companies pay pennies per the pound. Unless your contract reads otherwise, this means that any items lost or broken will be paid per the pound and not based on their actual value.

I just wanted to add that when hiring movers, it’s also good to focus on eco friendly practices as well. For example, hiring movers with bio-diesal trucks will help reduce your carbon footprint during your move. This is known as green moving and can actually save you more green as well!

You’re totally right to include the step of doing an honest sort-through of your belongings. The biggest problem with moving is too much cumbersome junk. The best way to make moving easier is to give things away.

I live in Fl and I have moved many times for the past 7 years and my last move was from Lake Mary to Orlando and was the easiest move ever coz i have learned from my mistake from the past which ” not choosing the right movers or company” . The most thing you wanna be sure of is to choose the right, you need to trust your belonging with the movers you choose to have peace in mind.

When you are going to choose a best moving company you should give consideration what to ask from them. First you make a list of services which you are required and then check which company provides all these services and in normal charges.
After that you should ask some questions like:-
1. Give Assurance that items are secured while moving.
2. if items are lost or damage then what are the Insurance Policy.

Insure Me | February 23, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Thank you so much for all the help and advice. i just moved and the one thing I forgot to do, was get insurance for the specific state I moved to. Auto insurance is super important to have, and so I quickly found the right service in my city using some help, but it was still a little annoying that I didn’t do it before I moved. So I would add that to the list maybe.
